Supermarkets offer a wide range of ready-made meals, which are inhigh demand. However, most of them are not healthy or even harmful to health. That is why you should pay attention to the ingredients of such products or those that are supposed to replace whole meals. Just because it says 'healthy' does not mean it is healthy.
With this article, we want to help you make healthier choices in the future. We will show you the names of the pests and what they can do to your body. Here is a brief overview of the substances you can expect:
- Maltodextrin
- Carrageenan (E 407)
- Aspartame
- Sulphur dioxide

Maltodextrin
If a product says it is sugar-free, but you find the term maltodextrin in the ingredients, it is better to leave it alone. This ingredient is nothing other than sugar. Although the substance does not taste really sweet, it is still unhealthy. Diabetics in particular should be careful with these products. Science has proven that although maltodextrin provides quick energy, it also causes insulin levels to rise rapidly.
Regular intake of this ingredient, in the long run, can lead to weight gain and increased cholesterol and blood fat levels. Maltodextrin is often added to drinks for people who cannot eat solid food or are severely underweight.
Carrageenan (E 407)
Carrageenan belongs to the group of carbohydrates. It is used in products as a thickening and gelling agent. In animal experiments, intestinal ulcers were found when the substance was taken in excess. This type of carrageenan is now banned in food. But the permitted carrageenan version, which we often see in supermarket products, seems more harmless. Nevertheless, it is suspected of causing allergies and possibly influencing the immune system. It is therefore better to avoid this type of additive.
Aspartame (E 951)
There has been a lot of discussion about this substance for many years. For some people, aspartame causes headaches, allergies and epilepsy. It has also been linked to brain tumours. Small amounts of the additive are harmless, but people should avoid consuming it if possible.
Sulphur dioxide
Also known as E 220, sulphur dioxide is often hidden in the ingredients list of ready-made products. It is used as a preservative and ensures that products/foodstuffs have a longer shelf life. Sounds sensible in itself, but the substance sometimes causes headaches and nausea in consumers. In addition, sulphur dioxide destroys vitamin B1. That is why the addition of this substance to staple foods with a high B1 content is also prohibited.
Bodies of allergy sufferers can respond to the additive with asthmatic reactions. And there are indications that the intestinal mucosa is negatively affected by sulphur dioxide. In principle, it is recommended to avoid products with this ingredient.
